Marriage Linked to Better Aging in Men, No Significant Impact on Women

  • A study of over 7,000 Canadians found married men or those who married during the study were twice as likely to age optimally compared to never-married men.
  • Among women, those who never married aged better than those who were widowed or divorced; married women showed no significant difference from never-married women.
  • Optimal aging was defined as freedom from serious physical, cognitive, mental, or emotional conditions, along with high levels of happiness and good health.
  • Social connections and healthy lifestyle choices, such as regular exercise and not smoking, were crucial for maintaining optimal health in later life.
  • The study highlights the need for sex-specific aging support programs, especially for those who are never married or have experienced widowhood or divorce.
