Is there a way to hire people without multiple assignments?

I hate assignments. I hated them while applying for jobs, and I hate giving them while trying to hire someone.

It's basically free work with no guarantee of employment. It's unfair to make people work so much, often people assign 2-3 days worth of work for such interviews.

Is there any other practical alternative though? I would love to know everyone's thoughts on this

If you are hiring for tech, I feel LLD or Machine Coding rounds are most relevant to the role. I never liked to take home assignments and earlier I opted for assignment rounds but these days I totally denied putting 3-4 days after work efforts in attempting it.

That's a different challenge altogether for my team, we don't have a CTO or tech folks. Can't judge what we don't understand.
