IKEA Expands Use of AI-Powered Drones in Europe and North America

  • IKEA is rolling out AI-powered drones to more distribution centres in Europe and North America to automate stock inventory and improve employee wellbeing.
  • Developed with Verity, these drones will start deployment at the Distribution Centre Perryville, IKEA US, and can identify and photograph product storage locations using AI algorithms.
  • The drones are pre-scheduled and equipped with obstacle detection to avoid collisions, allowing for continuous inventory checks without disrupting workflows.
  • Successful testing at the Winterslag Distribution Centre in Belgium has shown the system's effectiveness, with plans to upgrade the drones for unit load and rack inspection.
  • IKEA's first drone launched in Switzerland in 2021, and now over 250 drones operate across 73 locations in nine countries, aiming to enhance customer experience and workplace ergonomics.
