We’ve normalized overconsumption. Podcast while walking.

Reels in breaks. Music while cooking. Netflix while eating. Something is always filling the silence.

It’s like we’re scared of being alone with our own thoughts. There’s no breathing space left for your mind.

And then we say we feel groggy, and mentally tired. Of course you do. Your brain never gets a break.

i see why you'd blame the podcasts and the reels; it feels like a personal failure of discipline. but your brain isn't scared of silence, it's been trained for constant input by a work culture that never logs off. you're not overconsuming content, you're just stuck in the only gear your job has left you.

Damn, that's a good take tal

So so true, and here's my oversimplified way of looking at this:

Every part of the body gets tired when overused.

Do long runs every day and your knees start giving up. Train biceps every day and they don’t recover. Jerk off too often and it'll drain you.

But now we run our minds all day - from the moment we wake up to when we sleep: work, content, memories of yesterday, worries for tomorrow, social media, news.

The brain also needs rest. Give it some, and it might finally grow.

All good, but had to bring in jerking off into the conversation. Reduces the overall impact imo.

I am happy that I don't relate to this. Nothing in the background, it's just me and my thoughts. I can't even work properly if I don't pay my complete attention to it.

Correctly pointed out !! Excessive media consumption is really affecting our minds.

For couple of months I am following few habits. Avoiding mobile for first 1 hr after waking up. Sleep keeping mobile in a drawer. I have some books near to my bed. And when ever I wake up it’s the first thing I touch . Read couple of pages and get down. There is an app Opal which I am using that has really reduced my mobile usage. Sense of calmness is something which I am gaining back .

Good that you follow this routine

So how to overcome this 🥲. Uninstalled instagram and disabled youtube. Still using it in the browser (comparatively lesser than earlier though). Any other ideas are appreciated

Do you want a more technical solution? Try to find/build tools that monitor and block overusage. A more psychological/habit-based solution? Practice associating unnecessary views to wastage of time. At night, try to think what did you get by watching those videos for hours.

I am not well versed with either. Just aware that many different kind of solutions could exist. Currently I have a mild mix of the two.

Just try to keep a threshold. Like overall usage from "trashy" stuff is xyz minutes.

Well I agree and its ironically true on my part. But there is a way to criticize anything. If an Architect (may be 8+ yoe) is disagreeing in this sense then..anyway.

I started deleting every useless app on phone. Deactivated Insta. I only watch YT on Laptop. Trying to slow down things. Hope this should recover my brain fog 😂🙏

For Reels I have implemented limit of 30mins, before I used to watch everytime I touch my iphone and now I’m realising how much free time I have left in a day, for podcasts I listen it while gaming.

Being alone with your mind while constantly running scenarios is as bad as the things you mentioned, I would say if you actually want to reduce it, go out to nearby place like a park maybe talk to strangers, friends, family or colleague and a good conversation might make your whole day or even week and you will see changes in your life

Around a month back I've made a concious decision to sell my TWS earbuds, to help inhibit behaviour change.
