The downfall of software engineering. Rise of every other function
I used to look upto my SWE colleagues as geniuses who do things that simply cannot be done without years of practice
Me and my UX friends would look like lesser beings and mere mortals
But AI has changed this. Even I’m being able to send pseudo code, system logic and debug code along with designing the product.
After AI - I feel I’m smarter and more useful to the company than SWE friends.
Should this also mean I get paid equal or more than SWE friends at a similar level of experience? Perhaps yes.
Should I get the same amount of respect. Definitely yes.

You should get the respect either ways, but the AI has only changed the perspective of people. Yes with the right prompt you can definitely write code having zero knowledge of programming.
But in its core, programming has never been about writing code. There is so much more to it as a developer than to just write code. Understanding the system, the requirements, the logic and so on.
AI helps me write code too, but if I don’t know what the code does, I’ll end up in a pickle later. Scalability becomes an issue and many AI agents have been providing with packages that don’t even exist. As a non developer person, you will not know what is wrong with your code at all.

I agree that I’m achieving only a very basic level of coding with AI. And in its depth the understanding of CS and algorithms is an art/science that’s much deeper. Specially I’m sure AI can not help me write a scalable system as I don’t even know what to prompt the AI to solve for.
Appreciate the answer

Yes, and that is an added advantage. I work as an AI engineer with very basic knowledge of frontend, ChatGPT helps me write some html and css code. So, in short, people with just basic knowledge and skills will be replaced by AI.
I think the fault is on your side for thinking of the swe’s a geniuses when at the end of the day the truth is that humans are just chimps with slightly better specs

🤣 Arre bas bas bas

Correction : slightly better specs that are unique to themselves

Lol lol lol
( system designing is laughing in corner)😂

What code are you writing thats so easy?

Hmmm. By your logic, I should also get respected and paid well, because I drive my bike like Valentino Rossi. Right ? He also drives a super sport bike. I also drive one. He studies the track well before racing on it. I do the same except I drive on city roads with a mixed bunch of other drivers and zombies as well. Right ? Right ?

Idk why, but the tone of this post seems so immature.

I see f500 adopting these tools too. In another 2-3 year, you should be having enough synthetic data that makes the model smart enough. But for SWE too boom we need compute cost to drop furthur.

I don't know about the pay thing but as far as respect is concerned, you definitely should get and deserve equal respect at workplace.. what you do is equally important.
With AI, just like AI can do fairly simple UI, UX page designs given a prompt, it can write basic code given a prompt.. But that's about it... A developer's job, just like a designer's job involves much more that writing code or creating mocks.. That's where AI can't replace us, yet...

emphasis on the "yet..." 😂
Your mistake to think SWEs are geniuses. And if you think geniuses get paid more you're wrong there as well. Probably the ones with the most fragile ego in any workforce are the software engineers (even before AI). They're just riding the wave and making hay while the sun continues to shine. And they're probably the ones who talk like they know everything but the last to know what's going on in the business they're working in.

Bro, who hurt you?

I think the right question to ask is - which tool will make my work mundane and make me redundant or obsolete. Salary, Respect will keep following you once you have an answer to your question.
