The biggest lie about remote work..

Keep seeing this take that ambitious people want to be in the office and remote work is just for coasting. It's wild because my most productive days are when i don't go in. If you remove the commute, forced chats, and performative desk sitting, you get actual deep work done. Not because people are lazy. Because the physical office is designed for visibility, not effective output. This isn't an excuse to slack off. It's an explanation for why people who actually want to build things prefer staying home.

Yeah, and think about offices which have an open office concept, there is noise all over and it is hard to concentrate

What's an open office?

100%. Open floor plans just maximize the forced chats and distractions. It's impossible to get into a flow state with all that background noise.

Hmm. I used to be a big proponent for WFH, however in modern times my take has changed quite a bit. I think there's no one size fits all over here. 5 days WFO is the worst setup, 5 days WFH sounds good only in theory. However hybrid every week of the year might also not be the middle ground that people purvey it to be.

I would say each team should figure out its flexible working condition. All policies should be centered on treating people as adults. Have one or two assigned days in a week where everyone should be in office. Ensure that once an year there is an offsite of a few weeks to work from another place (hills, beach, etc.) Let people work a few weeks in an year from anywhere. In case of actually problems of working from office ensure that people feel well supported to work from home.

WFO is for people managers to satisfy their ego to get subordinates obeying them in front. Also to show that they have work and keep their job safe

Agree. I wouldn’t say a mandatory 1 or 2 days in office is good too. But, maybe once a month have a dedicated few days in office, only if needed for deep collaboration. Otherwise it just becomes performative.

Shepherding people to office each week and daily commutes are the worsssst

WFH is good when teams are scattered across locations.

WFO is good when teams can collaborate from same location for a few hours in a day.

5 days will exhaust people specially in locations like Bangalore, hybrid is better with days when people actually show up.

And ofcourse, teams should be allowed to work from anywhere for 1-2 months in a year.

All of the above is from work perspective. However, when IT parks do setup there is a bigger economics at play, lease of the companies, food vendors around, and so many things we don't know/bother to know.

So things happen to support a larger ecosystem than the system just around us as an individual.
