The absolute joke of "GenAI productivity" in tech right now.
Every single townhall at my company starts with the exact same gyaan. "We need to leverage GenAI", "Aim for 10x productivity", "AI won't replace you, an engineer using AI will."
Cool. I'm all for it.
But here’s the ground reality: The moment I connect to the company VPN, ChatGPT is blocked. Claude is blocked. Half the internet is blocked due to "strict data security policies".
So I asked my manager if we can get GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT Enterprise licenses for the team. The dude literally laughed adn said budget approvals for new SaaS tools are completely frozen for this quarter.
So let me get this straight. You want me to deliver 10x the code, write better documentation, and be a "prompt engineering ninja"… but you won't pay $20 a month for the actual tools, AND your IT team actively blocks the free versions?
What exactly is the expectation here? Am I supposed to type prompts on my personal phone and manually type out the code on my work laptop?
Leadership just wants to drop buzzwords to impress the board. The rest is just our headache.
Is this happening everywhere or is my workplace just uniquely stupid?

Service based company mai jo leaders hote hai they are literally morons… apna senior manager ka career path dekhna most of them come from 15-20 gad chtai…
My manager says that I can simply provide the requirements to GenAI, and it will handle generating everything for me… wo khud chuti** ko pata nahi hai requirements kya hai … jira ticket , confluence, document kuch maintain nahi hai … no KT , nothing… they just say everything can be handled by AI nowadays… inko kuch pata nahi bhai… I sit in a bay with my whole team, and honestly, no one communicates in proper Eng, not even my manager or team lead…Everyone just uses their own version of English…
Sabko bas AI , AI ata hai… client doesn’t provide basic AI access like github copilot or anything… i use llm … its really tough in this service based companies…

I am in Oracle and here they use to force us to use AI and asking day to day basis what all things you did with AI, they have provided us licence for open ai and codex and asking to use it as much as possible. After making us little productive they fired 2 out of 6 developers saying now 4 can handle 8 people's work. What can we say now....
Maybe they want you to pay for those GenAI premium versions from your own salary 🤣
i have a friend who works at a startup, and his CEO encourages him to use open sources model or run ai models locally on a fucking 4gb ram pc, saying be the tech guy.
I can completely relate to your situation. In my company, we have restrictions to such an extent - you cannot install pandas and numpy libraries even.
Same here. And it's not only the parent company, it heavily depends on the client company's policies if you're working on their laptop.
That's how witch companies operate. The good for nothing senior management just worries about buzz words, but when you ask them about any enterprise licence then suddenly data security, company policy blah blah will come into picture.
Wtf they don't pay for your AI tools?! That's unheard of. How do they expect you to deliver then?!
