Subletter ran away without clearing dues! What do I do?

I sublet a room in my apartment to a guy back in October. Met the guy twice in person, creds were also decent. IIT Delhi’ 19, works at Nielsen (In hindsight, not the best proxy). Two weeks in, evident signs of being petty and childish. Haggling with maid into not paying for days when he’s not there, abused and fought with the society guard of a parking issue, started picking up my stuff from the lobby and putting in his rooms (Found pots, WiFi cable, home tools).

Starting March, the guy started being obnoxiously and unreasonably aggressive over texts accusing me of hampering his metal health. Come April, he brought his MOTHER to stay at the flat for 2-3 weeks cause he believed he had no ‘leverage’ (whatever that means)

While my work had me travelling 12-15 days a month, I rarely saw him even during the days when I was home. I was however worried because my girlfriend (now fiance) would be sometimes over and be WFH and with now this chap being unreasonable, I had to ask him to move out.

Chap then said that he’d have his share of expenses paid from the security deposit.

Come mid May, chap exhausts his security deposit and is unwilling to pay for the rest of the month saying that he’ll clear the dues when he moves out (scheduled for 1st week May).

Turns out, this chap had to move to Hyderabad for his job. (All added up to being a clever ruse for the eventuality).

As (bad) luck would have it, I had to travel in first week May.

Chap moved out, blocks me on WhatsApp and iMessage and doesn’t clear dues worth ~₹40K

(PS, In hindsight, I do wish I didn’t tolerate his behaviour so subtly but I let it all slide cause he was a subletter and didn’t wanna risk any altercation with my girl around)

I guess only way is to name and shame on social media, but that may lead to lots of negativities and additional spotlight on you too. You may also threaten him that you will make his new organisation (HR, manager etc) aware of his fraudulent tactics with your evidences.

Any which way, it just depends on how angry you are, whether you are a pacifist and prefer peace of mind, or whether you hate being defrauded and well intent on teaching a lesson. If you don’t like to take much worry, then you can just take your lessons and move on too.

Renting is the riskiest business in India. This is a normal day for most house owners renting in Bangalore.
