Slow ‘Kannadizition’ of people from outside of K’taka

[Not to cause any stir - it’s a personal experience]

For past few weeks I’ve been noticing people focusing more on Kannada language, even when they understand Hindi or English or any other language for the matter of fact , people on the road/shops /petrol pumps have been forcing Kannada a little. It’s my personal notice, fee free correct me or share your experience.

(PS- I’m not asking anyone to speak Hindi or anything, just trying to understand if language was created in fact to make a successful communication, how is this behaviour helping any kind of communication)

Incident #1- My regular petrol pump guy for last 2+ years, who used to speak in Hindi with me, suddenly started replying in Kannada only. I speak Hindi and he speaks in Kannada - we understand each other and there’s no friction.

Incident #2- During peak traffic hours, I overtook a truck and it was a 3 lane road (Harlur Road), suddenly an auto guy came and started hammering on my car’s window with his fist - shouting in Kannada and not responding to my Hindi. I understand I shouldn’t have overtook it was a tight and congested road, but what is this behavior of a) Not at all paying any heed to any other language, shoving the local languages on eveyone? Esp when he realised I do not speak Kannada he continued.

Incident #3- While driving a Non KA number plate vehicle, a KA numbered Cab driver wanted side, it’s a single way, practically not possible for 2 cars to go side by side. But after 50 mtrs when I gave pass - he went ahead and stopped his car for about 5-10 secs. I was afraid if someone was getting down or something cause my father was with me. (This happened twice - once near Kudlu and once near Indira nagar)

So - I respect all local languages/religions/practices and I truly believe every regional cultures should be preserved. But isn’t harmony the true dharma?

If harmony can be achieved only by speaking Hindi, then sorry to say, this country doesn't need such harmony.

All the encounters quoted are with folks with whom we need to talk barely 8-10 words in Kannada and if we cannot learn that much then we are to be blamed.

It should be called either self proclaimed Hindi supremacy or utter laziness. There is no in between. Any other justification is just pure BS.

P.S. I'm not a Kannadiga but I've learnt enough words to manage in this city and people have been appreciative to me when I try. I even had an instance where a cab driver corrected my grammar with a smile. And I have always managed in English otherwise and never a single native Kannadiga had an issue with it.

No matter how much someone justifies - this will always be unfair and wrong. One shouldn’t have to suffer in day to day life just because of not knowing a certain language.
The language is being weaponised to the level where any Hindi signboards are being removed making life for outsiders difficult in every possible way. This is pathetic on part of local Bangalore people who support this shitty mindset. It’s best to get out if this stupid city. Not worth it imo.

This is because of politician They don't have jobs, so to create some issues so people are involved in those and forget the real problem. They wants us to be illiterate and follow blindly while their kids enjoy all the luxury

As a non Kannadiga who have lived for more than a decade in Bangalore, I believe most of issues are mostly road rage incidents blown out of proportion in social media. People on both sides make it a language issue. And auto drivers are rude in every town. I have faced road rage incidents with auto drivers in Bangalore as well as my home town.

Auto driver being rude is a trade mark. People who think BLR auto drivers are rude should go to chennai once. Road rage incidents happen every sec somewhere in BLR. This city is bursting in seams. A city is populated probably at 300% its capacity. Everyone is stressed out. Some guy decides to speak in his mother tongue. Suddenly language is weaponized? By this logic all south India should say, North India has weaponized its huge population. They are taking over south by immigration. This conclusion is as absurd as people who think language wars are becoming serious.

Keeping my biases aside, I've seen 2 sides of the entire people's behaviour and culture:
