Skill to work on if someone wants to switch?

Hey community folks, I wanted to know which approach is best or you tried yourself while trying to switch. I know trends are like either going for product based companies (Amazon, Microsoft, Intel) or going for Management consultancy companies (like Bain, BCG). What should one aim for career growth wise. Obvious question yet wanted to have people's thoughts on this.
