Should I stay a techie or try to prepare for govt state pcs exams

Hi folks

I'm currently working as a Full stack developer with 6 YOE now and TC 32LPA. While I enjoy the Technical side of my profession, I have long been considering appearing for state pcs exams. Mostly the reason is the job security , exposure to great connections (civil servants) , other sources of incomes etc. while being in private , I'll have to keep upskilling , pay upfront 30% taxes to govt and face this job uncertainty. I think 40-50 lpa in private should be equal to 10-15 lpa of govt given power , prestige and other benefits.I took a career break 8 years back to appear for upsc but left due to financial considerations. Pls. Advise.

My 2 cents, State PCs jobs will have lot of competition and you will have to start from 0. Plus work culture won’t be as professional as corporate. The growth will be slow and time based . If you are an ambitious and creative person don’t look for such jobs. Stay where you are and think about growing further in your career.
But yes try talking to people who are in this job and imagine if like being their place. More information will bring clarity,

I'm an ambitious person and into core development of products , but there are few of my friends in govt, their life is hectic at times and most of the things you said are true , but they get many in kind benefits from general public , like much much and they have good connections with other officers now. That's something which lures me ,a lot

Government jobs aren’t what it used to be. There is no pension for people 2004 onwards. Transfer at will bcos you didn’t play along the office politics of your seniors, nowadays people are dismissed as well so no 100% job security of earlier, depending on the location there is also a lot of mafia that control like coal, etc. All in all, its just a beurocratic job where your decisions are not yours. And those who think its free money or corruption, there are so many IT raids, court cases on those who do it. Many times your promotion is stopped bcos your senior didn’t like you. I know all this cos my father is retd civil services, and no one is interested in my family to do govt job, we’re all in private. So its not all that people make it out to be

40-50 lpa ain't similar to 10-15 no matter how many perks you get. You can say 25 is similar to 15 given you get house and house helps but definitely not 40-50.

No , money is not the only motivation. I've been making decent money being an SDE. It's more about job security , connections and prestige

Govt employees can't hide from taxes. They are the first to pay.

I have an idea. You can continue to have good relations with bureaucrats since u know them. With their money and your skill, start a business ( probably continue to work in private) , all of you earn good money.

It clearly seems you want to give it a shot, you should try for it.. if it doesn't work out you can always come back to IT, so don't have regrets later

If your reason is other sources of income then please stay away from govt jobs. We have enough leeches already.
