Data science is very broad and there are a lot of fields involved. So you can decide which one to pick initially. I started with recommendation systems.

Pick a book on your topic
Finish it end to end
Then solve some easy problems on Kaggle

This way you will build something by following a book and you will learn how to use various tools and techniques. Then try to implement those techniques on similar problems on Kaggle.
This should get you started. Should take around 3-4 months for this.

Once you start to dig deep, then go for Andrew Ng course, it’s amazing
