PMing through and through

I feel like startups have unreasonable and unnecessary self induced pressure at times. I am working as an APM at a gate management startup and all I feel is pressurized even though the release gets delayed whether due to faulty implementation or dev or qa or requirement change from business side which the PM has no control over. While all this is happening you are left to wonder where did you lack? Was it at Product Management or at Project Management because clearly both are not happening properly.

It's weird how so little at times is in your control and yet how all the blame you have to take because primarily it was your job to think it all through.

Now you see why this job is needed and paid well.

Hope every idiot that asks question “why are PMs needed and they are so well paid” read this post. We are held accountable for every task performed in our pod by people on whom we have no authority. This includes people across all verticals Dev,Marketing,Ops ,Risk etc.
So each vertical cares about just the output while we are being judged and reprimanded over outcomes.

Also in small startups u are accountable even if dev servers are nit working and that delays the output. Gets too much to take

As an APM you’re expected to execute stuff! It’s alright if you miss timelines sometimes, as a practise, always note down in a doc, the timelines promised by engg, timelines promised to business.

If some requirement changes, inform all the stakeholders in that very doc about the last min changes, and the new timelines.

Rule #1: Overcommunicate

It's a best advice. Tho, I am not in PM role yet but as bid manager I also have to make sure to write and communicate all the timelines and state responsibilities clearly. This is the most efficient way to manage stakeholders and get job done!

PM roles have made startups with average talent pool more inefficient

I believe Product Management is a really toxic role

  1. High pressure on timelines- business and top management shits on you if you don’t deliver on time
  2. No power to control the outcome- engineers don’t listen to you neither does the design or analytics team, you end up begging for res...
