pivoting from product to tech [seeking advice]
Hi All
I have 2.5 YOE as an analyst, currently working as an senior product analyst with CTC of 15L fixed + 5L ESOPs.
I have only been in product since start of career and have a set path to becoming an APM at my firm by next cycle in Dec.
Recently I wanted some building experience and I have built a few web and mobile apps and I found coding is very interesting.
I’m having thoughts about switching careers because of 2 reasons:
- Money - although I believe I’m underpaid (cause I received offers of 22L fixed for role of product analyst in past but chose not to switch because of market volatility.)
But in long run, I believe being tech is going to make a lot more money compared to product roles (I have friends with 1-2 YOE making 26L fixed) and the remote opportunities.
- Skills Product is mostly soft skills and tech is more hard skills driven. With amount of layoffs in PM roles, I think tech is just a safer bet. Also given I don’t hate coding. I think I would happily code compared to doing things like user calling/ making review decks/ following up with other teams meticulously/ writing PRDs.
One specific question I have is: what are things in tech role that are not very fun to do but still part of JD?

Machine Learning would be an easier path for you I fell
*feel Relatively easier since you are in product analyst role and you will certainly get opportunities to build some simple ML solutions too... Assuming you predominantly work with data to get insights and analysis.
Data Engineering is an even better option as of now
What are the main fields in the tech ? Quick context : i am a student.
It all depends on your career goals and aptitude. Product roles are suited for future entrepreneurs and leaders. Tech roles are suited for hardcore techies and engineers. Think about 5 yrs in future what do you more want to be like. Money is there in both roles.
Having the same dilemma but I think soft skills trump hard skills as you move up in your career. Little background: I thought I would enjoy coding or doing hardcore technical work but very soon I got bored. Realised it’s just not my cup of tea so now planning to move at a product role(analyst)
Bdw what kind of qualification is required for PA roles genetically speaking ?
