Pan card number being asked before 1st round of interview from recruiters

Hey everyone,

I am actively looking for job with 6 yrs of experience in HR domain. I have been getting few calls from recruiters asking for pan card number with other details.

Is it really necessary to share pan number even before the 1st round of interview??

They said it is to check if duplicate profiles are created for same candidate under one pan number. If it is so, they would just keep 1 profile
