Nearly 40,000 People Died Alone in Japan in First Half of 2024

  • Almost 40,000 people were found dead alone in their homes in Japan during the first half of 2024
  • Of these, nearly 4,000 were discovered more than a month after death, with 130 bodies going unnoticed for a year.
  • Japan, which has the world's oldest population, is grappling with a growing issue of elderly citizens living and dying alone.
  • 70% of the deceased were aged 65 and above, with the largest group being those aged 85 and older.
  • The findings will be presented to a government group addressing unattended deaths, as Japan continues to struggle with its ageing and declining population.

People may comment that not marrying, staying away is the reason. Even if you are with family, your body may be found faster than this, but you will still die. Once dead, all this doesn't matter anyway

Jokes apart... But the lost decade of 1990 and the decade of sky high asset price growth is one of the major reason for this. People born in 60s in Japan are the main victims today. Politicians if they don't pay focus on inflation this is bound to happen. India will face a similar issue in another 30 years.

Many countries exhibit this character when there is unafforability in the market. Greece, Spain, all face the same issue. They balance it out thru immigration, Japan and Korea did not.
