Just bought my first car — sharing my full experience, tips, and unexpected insurance hack that saved me a lot 🚗💸
I wanted to share my recent car-buying journey — I’ve been lurking here for a while, reading up on people’s experiences, so I thought I’d return the favor with mine. This was my first car purchase, and being in my 20s, I was super cautious about budgeting, documentation, and of course, insurance (which turned out to be trickier than I expected).
🧩 The Car Search
I was clear about 3 things:
Budget: ₹7–10 lakhs
Type: Hatchback or compact SUV
Priorities: Reliability, mileage, and low maintenance
After test-driving a few, I shortlisted:
-
Tata Punch
-
Maruti Baleno
-
Hyundai i20
I finally went with the Tata Punch Creative AMT variant. It felt solid, spacious for its size, and feature-loaded for the price.
💰 Financing + Hidden Costs
Here’s something I didn’t expect: on-road prices varied A LOT depending on the dealership. Always cross-check quotes and get everything in writing — some sneak in weird charges under different names.
I ended up using Tata’s own finance option because they gave a better rate than my bank (9.3% vs 10.5%).
🛡️ The Insurance Drama (and the Acko Hack)
Here’s where it got annoying. The dealership pushed their “preferred insurer” (some tie-up) and quoted me ₹38,000 for basic 1-year own damage + 3-year third party.
I felt it was way too high, so I checked online. Acko quoted me ₹24,000 for the same coverage — no hidden charges, and with zero-dep add-on.
They even offered a further discount if I used a referral link (which I’ll drop below if anyone’s interested). Saved me almost ₹14,000 right there. Plus, the whole process was digital — no paperwork, no running around.
➡️ Referral link for Acko (gets you extra cashback/discount if you're buying insurance online): 👉 https://acko.ref-r.com/c/i/30718/53147288
📦 Delivery & Final Tips
Took ~9 days from booking to delivery
Do a PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection) before signing anything
Avoid extended warranties blindly — they’re usually not worth the price
Don’t feel pressured into accessories — I bought mine separately from Amazon at 1/3rd the price
Final Thoughts
Buying your first car is equal parts exciting and stressful. Do your homework, don’t rush, and definitely don’t let the dealer handle your insurance unless it’s genuinely cheaper.
If anyone has questions about pricing, insurance, or anything else, happy to help!

How's tata and it's famous after sales service.

Tbh it completely depends agency to agency. i have seen a lot of bad reviews about tata service but keeping fingers crossed for now.

I actually loved safari and harrier. But I was so worried about tata and after sales i dropped the plan of buying tata. Bought honda. No regrets though.

Cost wise Acko is good but realtime claim clearance is bit lengthy. Also many times they deduct multiple hidden charges.

Claim clearance have been pretty good for me till now for my other vehicles and also have seen good positive response from friends and family so went ahead with them.
