Is LinkedIn dead for people seeking referrals?
I've been trying to get referrals for job opportunities on LinkedIn for a while now and 95% of them either don't even bother opening the texts or just leave me on read. My messages have been professional and polite and yet none bother to at least reply. Is it so hard to provide a referral or ask around to see if there are openings in their own company? Or is it just people not wanting to help?

Yes, sometimes it is hell of a task when you get 20+ msgs everyday to refer for a position, like a chain reaction.

I'll tell you from the other end. I receive almost 2-3 referral requests every day. And these pile up endlessly. And I'm not even in FAANG.
On top of that, not even a single one of my referrals has gotten an interview call.
I see 😌 sad state of job market I guess... But it's a common perception that referrals help better the chances of getting the applications approved... So people would be naturally wanting one when they are applying for a job. There are too many people competing for a handful of openings.
