I don’t think AWS is to blame here. There is No redundancy, no fail over, no load balancing. 99.9% availability is what AWS publishes which is 8.5 hours of downtime each year. If you need 99.999% uptime, you need to use multiple regions not just US East.
Even if they're within their SLA a fuckup is a fuckup. It wasn't planned downtime. you really think most companies have the time and resources to add fallbacks for every SAAS they use?
Using multiple regions is a valid call for companies as big as Google, but AWS definitely has some blame to take.
A hypothetical scenario; when US senate doesn’t approve some plan or budget or land acquisition. They demonstrate to all stakeholders why are they important & need to expand. Lot’s of maybe……
