India's Demat Accounts Surpass Populations of Major Countries

  • In August, 42.3 lakh new demat accounts were opened, bringing the total to 17.11 crore.
  • This addition was slightly lower than July's 44.44 lakh but much higher than August 2023's 31 lakh.
  • India's demat accounts now exceed the populations of Russia, Ethiopia, Mexico, and Japan.
  • The total demat count is close to Bangladesh's population, ranking ninth globally.
  • Since January 2023, over 6 crore new demat accounts have been added, showing a growing interest in equity investing among Indian households.
