India’s best performance in IMO

After participating for the first time in 1989, India has participated in 35 editions, winning 20 Gold medals, 74 Silver medals, 79 Bronze medals, and 29 Honourable mentions. Previously India's best was in 1998, when India won 3 Gold and 3 Silver (and stood 7th).

Fun fact: "On its stupendous feat of 3 Golds & 3 Silver medals in IMO '98 in Taiwan, MM Joshi, then HRD minister invited the team to his house. On being told, we are 7th in overall rank, he exclaimed: "सप्तर्षि मे आगये, धृवतारा बनना है।" KVPY was seeded there." (Source: Prof. C.S. Yogananda).
