I haven't saved a single penny in last 3 yrs

I am a middle class boy. Working in Banglore. I am earning 1.5L every month from last 3 yrs. But still I don't have a penny saved. I have to give all my money to my parents. They have huge debts and to avoid extra expenses i am working from home. It is killing my social skill but i am prioritising money over my social skills. I see my friend going to trips all around the world and while me scrolling through Instagram all the time looking at their photos. Still using my college phone and not upgraded to i phone, Uninstalled all shopping apps for unnecessary shopping are some steps I took to save extra money. The point is sometimes i feel proud to help my family to come out of this situation, but in the other hand i am losing the most important time of my life.

I really feel this time i pushing me back by 5 yrs and really don't know what to do...

Social skills are irrelevant, can be acquired at any age. In most of the cases, what you call social skills is actually peer pressure to do some things that make you compatible with a random crap group.

Going to trips is highly overrated, increases carbon footprints, makes lives of local people (of the tourist area) miserable. Everyone is trying to become Ibn Battuta for no reason. Life is more joyous with family and school/college/childhood friends.

Stop using social media. Twitter is fine for news/trends/popular culture (never try to follow trends or popular culture, just be aware of them), or even skip Twitter if you've better source for these things. Follow only meaningful people on LinkedIn, remove connection with someone as soon as they like/repost crap.

After using Android for long time, iPhone software seems like it was developed by the kids for the kids. No customisation, no sideloading apps, all the web browsers look same because apple has put restriction over the Browser Rendering Engine and Architecture. Don't want ads in YouTube? Watch it in browser with ad blocker (bad experience) or buy premium (give money). You'll feel like throwing the phone, sorry iPhone, on the wall very often. Buy 1+ (great hardware, low price, decent software) or Samsung (great software, bad hardware in low price range, best hardware in higher range)

E-commerce apps are there only for unnecessary purchase. You'll make great friends while buying grocery from local shop, for other items, use e-commerce websites with ad blocker and anti-tracking extension so that they don't get chance to track you and throw targeted ads.

Always be proud of yourself, while keeping your privilege in check and be a good human being. For people coming from ≤30k salery bracket, once the academics are completed, no part of life is "most important".

No you're not pushing yourself back, you're doing great. Keep yourself and your family happy, fit, healthy and strong. That's all that matters. Start saving after paying off the debts. Life is very long.

You have done your part, drained 30+ lakhs on your family. Lie to your family that you have been laid off. Ask them to save as well. Start investing that savings. Ask your family to start a local business with some intial funding of 2-3 lakhs.

Bro, no one even called me even once in a month when I was struggling alone in a city after moving from village to fulfil my dream of getting educated. I cooked, cleaned utensils too for money. 5 years down the line, after BSc and MSc, when I cracked a big job, everyone start loving me. That day I realised I'm just a cash card for my family. That's men's life. Don't ask him to try this, he would lose all respect for his family. No one loves a failed man.

@BigL respect what you've achieved.

Man's job is to provide, not be a slave to other people's stupid decisions. Even if family.

Better be estranged than be a cash cow to people who don't even appreciate it.

In the same boat from last 5 years since started working. I earn 1.9 lakh per month, 1 lakh goes to family for bad loans. During covid did moonlighting, earned 3 lakhs per month, 2 went to home. Not able to do anything for myself. Soon turning 30 as well. Sometimes I feel to just give up and run away. I know it’s really hard. Respect brother!

It's okay. Everyone starts from scratch.
Restructure your expenses and finances. Start saving now. The existing debts can be restructured too to allow some savings. Start from the basics first.

  1. Have a term insurance
  2. Comprehensive health insurance for self and parents
  3. Get loan/debt insurance if possible
  4. Take help from fee-only financial advisor/planner
  5. Once all of the above are done, start saving some part of income for your own personal expenses. It can be for anything A to Z.

You might be lured into paying off debts quickly by ignoring the savings. But remember that today's savings will secure your future. If you don't secure your future, the debts might double up in future.

I got 1st and 2nd point covered but what is 3rd? What is loan/dept insurance?

WobblyNarwhal

It's a insurance for loan taken. In the unfortunate event, the loan amount payment is handled by the insurer

If you earn 3 L. You'll likely end up giving your parents all that money. I have seen countless people in this loop. Always having to take the extra burden of the debt that parents took and in most cases manage carelessly. Start saving for yourself. 30% or something. Tell your parents its paycut or anything. This will go long way in the future.

Completely agree with @Aadimanav . You are doing nothing wrong. Very few of us get a real chance to make feel parents proud and feel proud for self. You got it and nailed it.
most of kids are spoliling or spending parents money till they start earning and then they dont care except giving money for essential things to parents and spend rest of money to have so called better life which is just influenced by others.
Whereas, people like you make difference. Certain level of dissatisfaction we all feel sometime but don’t let it set in your brain. You will realise value of your dids whn you will have kids. Proud of you bro.....keep doing what you are doing...as god is watching you and smiling on his better creation among crowd of selfish herds
