How prepared are you for AGI?
AGI, in very very crude terms, is an artificial intelligence that is generally smarter than almost all humans at almost all things. Though, people keep changing its definition slightly to be more stringent as we uncover more astounding AI research.
Such a tech will have universally gargantuan impact on the job economy and capitalistic markets. For eg: An improved version of SORA can generate 90-min long movies (estimated by end of 2024).
Also, unless we have an acceptable solution for the VERY HARD "Alignment Problem", we're not even sure if such an AGI will even have our best interests at heart.

With AI, why aren't we inventing a time machine?
And get back in time to kill AI
Do you also feel that people around you are blissfully ignorant about upcoming avalanche ?
I just feel privileged to be witnessing this civilization altering technology.....

Blissfully would be an understatement.
With AGI, since it is intelligent, sentient and definitely not human, we'll probably witness the rise of a new species (not necessarily biological, maybe technological-biological hybrid?) that may or may not have an easily understandable physical form. The ramifications might be interstellar.

I am in for Space Faring Luxury communism.

I can imagine this conversation being had when the dudes invented the steam engine back in the days

The roles whose barrier to entry are not high will be eliminated in next 2 years.
Like customer support, operations etc
Even the entry level software jobs will be eliminated, with so much productivity in coding, they will only need 1 engineer in place of 3.
The number of architect roles will increase as the engineers are insanely productive, need someone on top to build the systems.
Overall, there will be a massive battle and it’s a competition to the bottom.
Too bad, it came too early while we are building our lives. But it’s what it is.

I like your pragmatism, friend. It is what it is.
We can only hope people around us are good people who stick together in the difficult times to come.

I feel the same for UX roles. I wish I stuck to industrial design instead of UX Deisgn. Since any Tom, Dick and Harry can become a UX designer, I guess AGI’s first choice would be to take away UX jobs. I was thinking yesterday what are the roles that AI can’t take over. I’m 30 YO abs it’s too late for me to make a career change. Will be getting married soon and my responsibilities are about to increase

I feel people don’t fully grasp what it means for an AI to be able to learn and self-correct independently. It can literally change its own code based on new learnings and adapt to complex new challenges.
Once such an AI is able to connect to the internet and actively update its knowledge base, it will grow exponentially. Not only that, since almost all our lives are inevitable tied to the digital realm now, its impact could be much more far-reaching than just making fake videos or writing college assignments for lazy people.
I’m not one for doomer-ism of Terminator proportions, but even if we can control such AI, it will only increase the power divide in the world - and might even trigger a different level of information warfare.

Yup. Terminator-style stuff is far into the future. People with powerful AI will kill each other accidentally (see Alignment problem) or deliberately much before that.

we've got something else to worry about in the larger scheme of things,

Which is?

crime and poverty.

I don't think there is anyone who is prepared for AGI tbh. There is no way anyone could have runway of more than 2-3 years in their savings account

What to do then?
