Genz's please take the interviews seriously if you really want the job - Frustrated Founder
I run a nice startup & have been trying to hire for interns & junior positions for a while. Most of them are Genz's & I am not sure how to deal with this issue.
-
Half of them don't turn up for the intro call despite being booked on the calendar nor do they care to inform. Ok with cancellations but at least inform.
-
Some of them are out in a park, in a cafe or even sitting down their current office so they can't turn on the screen nor can I hear them properly. I mean do you really want this job?
-
After rescheduling as per their time, you are sharing details regarding assignment & screening for second round, half of them don't revert (which is great coz they are out of the list) & other half use AI to send a shitty assignment. How do I even give feedback without offending them?
Either there are a lot of job options available or they believe in wasting a lot of time.
One interview, 1000+ job opportunities
Take a 10-min AI interview to qualify for numerous real jobs auto-matched to your profile 🔑I have seen this happening in jobs/internships where the stipend is low <50k . Maybe increase stipend and add a screening like OA or ai resume filtering then take interviews

Niche startup but can’t pay interns more than 50k a month?
Either you are trump’s wet dream capitalist or the startup has poor margins or is pre revenue.
I belong to GenZ and would defend the GenZ folks, I have seen peers busting their asses for their jobs, folks who never went to any college lecture now work rigorously to support their family and their career/ personal journeys as well as their firm’s growth all the while facing a more than ever hostile global/ social environment (especially for Indians/ Indian ethnicity)
Mech/ Electrical peers who once thought tech was the only way out did a 360 and my semiconductor folks currently have more net worth than the tech folks(god bless nvidia). Mech folks opened workshops/ drones for pyrotechnics, window cleaning, manufacturing some components for recent indian space tech boom etc.
One friend was about to manufacture a simple component partnering with a bigger indian manufacturing firm for tesla but couldn’t proceed due to 50% tariff stuff as obvio the contract went to southeast asia due to dirt cheap tariffs there. ( Kinda reminded of how my dad’s efforts to expand harley davidson’s manufacturing combining with his firm and other local suppliers fell through circa 2015-16 and then harley shifted to thailand(operational in 2018 I think) coz India plant faced tariffs/ negative buy in Asean markets at that time, and my dad’s efforts yielded nothing to expand / partner with us firms🥲)
Indians face the highest barrier to commerce/ work/ revenue gen worldwide right now.
Blatant genai is lazy posts might be feel good for ranting. But trust me earlier generations had it better.(relatively)

*GenZ is lazy posts
Boi I am way too sleepy for this. Sorry if my above comments hurt you in any manner but it is the hard truth. I see around my peers(genz) and all I feel is that the ambition in them is highest it can be, but the barriers have also become way higher. And while the govt is as always focussing on the major chunk if their voters and hence food stamps/ freebie schemes take precedence they should probably also negotiate or look into with folks(of different countries & especially US) of how they can make these barriers for their people easier/ lighter

I agree but still They should keep up the words. lot of opportunities out there competetors are ready to pay more. So they are looking for the best choice.

Just got ghosted by HR, PM, was waiting for almost a hour, but none of those motherf*uckers cared to even let me know that they are cancelling or rescheduling. It’s a 2 way street. You guys deserve every bit of this.

I am talking about my experience. I don't deserve this coz I do give feedback on assignments, be on all the calls on time & if I reject, I do give a reason. The HR & PM are definitely unprofessional & they deserve it. I don't.

I don't think you're paying them enough my company also pay be around 200$ so most of the time I don't give a fuck as well, if you pay them good they will work neither becouse they want to but they have to maintain the job and if they shit with you that much why didn't you fire ? Another thing if you can't able to give money to the standard you don't need them ? Thanks you can correct me if you want

Agree & Disagree. We don't even mention the stipend on the JD. I am talking about issues before the first call itself. Also, yes we can't match what tech companies pay but we do pay well as per market standards.

People out here saying the founder isn't offer 50k per month for an intern. Are you guys insane or what ? You think money grows in trees ? Or a bootstrapped company had blind money stacks just rotting in the corner waiting to be spent on, like making money rain on someone ?
Bruh. You are an intern. You don't have a credibility established yet. That's why you are INTERNing. To learn, to grow, to establish that credibility. I'm pretty sure they are offering atleast 20-30k to cover basic needs while you intern there. Please grow some senses and demand the pay based on what position you are applying for and how big the company is. Bootstrapped !== Well funded startups.
And now, coming back to OPs problem at hand. Yes. They all are offer shopping. Not looking for a serious role. They value money more than anything else. And that is because of these shit eating recruiters in other companies. Posting fake jobs that look realistic. Trying to low ball even the best of the candidates, saying its to understand their negotiation skills and all that HR crap. Playing mind games with these young kids. Especially by these shitty recruiters in the early stage, small to medium sized startups and companies.
This has left these young kids absolutely confused on what to believe and whom to trust. It seems to have cracked their confidence as well. And when they see a bootstrapped, they do apply, but the trauma hits them back and they just ghost you.
There's simply no one solution to this. You just gotta put yourself out there, talk about what you and your company does, your values and vision, help them understand that you are not one of those shit eaters (unless you are 😕).
Basically walk the talk, talk the walk.
