Fancy talkers do the best in Corporate

Agree? Like you’ve to magnify and prettify your work while presenting it. Unless you’re able to do that, no matter how brilliant you are - you’re not gonna survive long in this mess (solid performers work wise are laid off).

A good leader will catch the BS. Communication skills and story telling is a skill. Calling it fancy talk is just duh.

The leader himself is faking a lot. It’s not all BS but the impact created is definitely BS. Like you need to put on a show of how you’re going above and beyond. Without it, even if you did that - it’ll not register. So those who have this skill are the best players in this world

The problem is absence of good leaders. Here in Microsoft(atleast the managers around me), managers themselves aren't technically sound and the one who makes the most noise gets their attention.

Its true everywhere. Not just in corporate. Everyone loves an extrovert. Someone who can express, someone who's extremely confident in their shoes.

Even in our lives, dont we remember film stars more than PhD scientists who do amazing work?

Do we know our local politicians names?

Does it mean everyone needs to be an extrovert? No, but does it mean people should know that they are responsible for their own career? Absolutely!

So, how do we fix it?
Well, 1 way is, figure out who's responsible to help you grow in your career. It would most probably be your manager. Now, see what are the things on his plate that needs fixing. Take it up, do it, and then, you dont have to glorify to anyone, just keep your manager apprised of whatever you do. Now, if the manager is sane, that person sees the merit in your work, you get the appraisal/bonus/going to next level.

P.S - i choose my teams/managers carefully, i am no extrovert and i have not glorified my work anywhere

Your advice is good and will work around sane people. But otherwise this is what will happen: your manager gets more time to do work for his own manager or time for sugarcoating things. Then the skip manager will reward your manager and your manager will create a story to keep you doing the same. Now unless the skip manager takes time to understand who is really doing the ground work or you somehow bypass your manager to show your work - you’ll not get any reward.

Great advice, how do you choose managers? I mean, I’m assuming only hearsay right? What other people say about the team or the manager, because unless you’re working with them, you can’t really know how they’re gonna be.

Managers (Not good at Tech) used this tactic..to impress leadership.

And Strong Tech or IC only stands behind the curtains...

Communication is important, especially when you are growing into senior levels. You cannot ignore it like, it is not my area of expertise.

FluffyNugget

Yup, that’s my point. Only way to do best at corporate is to upskill in this.

Works for shallow companies

FluffyNugget

Corporate itself is a lot shallow. Rarely you can be your true self to progress

Just corporate?
Bruh everywhere

Mostly bcoz as a surgeon or some doctors you cannot do this

Earlier in my life I would have disagreed. Now I strongly agree that glam talk is required (a lot) to do well in corporate

FluffyNugget
FluffyNugget

Yes even I would’ve disagreed when I was a junior. But now I know better seeing the main trait higher ups carry and what makes them shine infront of their higher ups.

Someone said this - "Even the people on top of the corporate ladder dont know what they are doing!"
Everyone is a human at the EOD, and humans like a good story! Even the sales people use this tactic to sell their products to you. And what are you selling there? - YOURSELF! Your Brand! So, ofcourse, everyone needs to tell their story(here the work they have done) in a way that it stands out from the people who do the same work in the industry. Otherwise, you fall flat on the bell curve.

💯 and unfortunately doing this well is enough. Very few go into the details. You can get away with less work but more of this.

Sugar coating stuff nowadays has become very common, even if you are dumb but if you throw 2-3 fancy jargons, people get convinced, which is sad to see but its a bitter truth.

💯 even some recruiters look for buzz words so this system highly rewards this

Will not work in startups. Could work in witch companies or hierarchy based company.

FluffyNugget

Small startup, sure. But mid size like 200+ you would still have some hierarchy. Even in small if leadership is outside India while rest in India then this happens.
