Expected hike for SE to SSE promotion

In a B2B product startup in ideal world scenario. (Don't factor in the current scenario)

I don’t think companies give 30% hike for promos. From my experience.
Usually it’s 15-20% at max for junior devs. And the percentage decreases as the seniority increases.
But I don’t have much exposure to how startups work in this regard

I'm not very sure about this. Previously I have received upwards of 40% hike in an appraisal, even though there wasn't any promotion involved.

I think in product startups, people usually expect the hike to be 15-25% in normal appraisal cycles. This is atleast true for junior roles, i.e. 1-3 yr experienced.

When you’re promoted, you end up at the almost bottom of the next level’s band. If you’re already well (top of the band) paid as a SE2 for example, you’ll get a minimal raise. So expect accordingly.

Agreed. So you mean, the farther away the person is from the band of the next profile, better the appraisal %age would be.

But is it also possible that after the promotion, instead of landing up at the bottom of the next band, they land you somewhere in middle of it. (Probably during appraisal negotiations?)

Usually no, only if you’re like an exceptional talent. Possible, definitely, although hard in the current market conditions.

Hike percentage is relative anyways.

Personally managed to get only about 30k/month extra starting of year, manager hopes he’ll be able to give more maybe mid year, or in next cycle 🥲 🤞
