Dealing with management

How do you deal with the situation when you have worked hard as an acting lead and expect to be promoted as Lead but the management somehow decides to give the position to someone who was not even part of the project earlier and has 0 project knowledge. Just because his team's project got ramped up and he being an old employee of the company. On the other side, me doing very well from quite a long time and even a stakeholder delight.
