Confused with Firing & Hiring

Hi All, As we have seen many startups are firing highly paid engineers and hiring for the same post with way less salaries. Is it only happening because the market is bad?

Are these salaries going to be the new normal for engineers? Given that people are ready to take jobs even with less salaries.

I wanted to know your thoughts.
