Be a Dev, Product manager skills aren't transferable!

Controversial opinion or reality? Are product management skills non-transferable, especially in mid-career?

I've been hunting for a full-time product role as a fresher (2025 grad) and have noticed several job postings and hiring updates for PMs requiring "3-5 years of relevant experience"—often within the same sub-sector of the domain.

Does this mean that core product skills like Product Sense, Design, and Analysis don’t transfer across sectors?

If that’s the case, what’s the point of starting as a PM if switching industries within product is so difficult?

I might be experiencing this firsthand—I interned in Consumer Tech (Media/OTT), working on personalization and discovery, streamlining reporting for leadership, brainstorming new retention metrics, and solving bottlenecks.

Yet, I'm facing rejections for Product Analyst roles because I “lack experience” in a particular sector.

Senior PMs, how are you tackling this?
