"respectable" obviously depends on who you ask. But I'd say at 42 most software engineers in Bangalore have a paid off home and would have a net worth over a crore.

At 42 you should have a fully paid home, car and no other personal/credit card loan. That will be your real asset. Now real network without inheritance should be ideally 3-4cr.. So that you can ideally retire in the next 3 years

Agree. At 42 if you have a paid off home and no outstanding loan then you are in a good shape.from now onwards you can build corpus for retirement.

Is this liquid savings or total net worth? For a 40+ IT professional with family, fully paid house + 1cr liquid savings might be a comfortable net worth I think.
