About IITians

IITians always have a headstart in most of the things , be it interviews , be it asking for funds from VCs , be it meeting with board of any company to present their ideas and much more . I wanted to ask one thing that if you are even a metallurgy student in BTech at IIT BOMBAY then you will be able to land roles in consulting, IBs , product, growth but is the situation same for mtech students at IITs who are planning to puruse their masters , will they have same value

Btech students at IIT call mtech as Matka.

Means u can't get through IIT so gate.

In long term it depends on ur perseverance, after 10y even a tier 4 grad can beat IIT cse guy if latter doesn't work hard.

You can't eat the degree feast for long

Agreed

Consulting/Investment Banking/FMCG roles are simply not open to MTech students

MTech placements are focused on core placements, with the occasional non-core analytics roles

The value of Btech IITians is due to two factors:

  1. Clearing one of the most difficult exams in India.
  2. Having that IIT culture for overall personal growth.

Clearing a Gate course and being in an Mtech course in IIT doesn't fulfill any of these, hence the value isn't that much.

But BITS enjoys similar perks, due to nailing Point 2.

Is it worth it?

Is doing an executive or part time mtech or MBA from IIT/BITS worth it in the long run? Like hikes or better roles when you switch?
