A Subject We Never Taught: Being Human

Why does our curriculum teach Mughals, world wars, revolutions but not humanity, morals, ethics as one of the subject by backing with case studies?

Children know how empires rose and fell, but not how values stand firm.

We shape minds with facts, not hearts with morals.

Why not one subject on ethics, discipline, and empathy?

Yes, parents play a huge role in shaping values. But one spends most of life till 20 in classrooms; schools shape more than just minds.

education has become a business, i dont know if the ones setting up the system care for morals as much.

Business is in everything. Its in your pants, in your shirt

Not a fan of Rahul Gandhi, he once said this.

We had a subject, 'dharam shikha' till class 8. This is a common subject in DAV schools. But at that point of time , we were like why are we studying this. Sometimes we realise the value of things later in life when we go past away from them.

SwirlyMuffin

Yes..It depends on the way it's being taught..

Psychology, economics, basic survival skills and knowledge, knowledge of using basic tools and a lot many other things are not taught which a person should know from childhood. But no, you have to be brought up and raised with the skills to become a slave of the capitalist system and the government.

Terminology alert "slave" !!!

Umm..."slave" not really but yes there are gaps :)

Because ethics and morality is subjective You can all agree upon a lot of things but if a single disagreement can cause a lot of tension

Ethics and morality is purely derived via religion and culture for most of the people So unless you a school catering to a certain religion and culture it doesn't make sense

History is just facts which everyone can agree upon

SwirlyMuffin
SwirlyMuffin

Hmm... to some extent I agree there will be a religion correlation.

Because the syllabus would never end.

We can define levels right...keep minimum basic required.. I mean no PhD... just good enough to be able to understand and see things from emotional sense..

Like many children bully some specific child.. if they are made to aware since childhood these terms trauma, self-esteem etc etc stuff.. I think they will think twice before doing wrongs.. and there are many such things..

Circumstances and the events that the child goes through in their environments are a driving factor of how they react to it and append it in their own actions.

This problem cannot be solved as a subject. This is more of an environment driven problem which should be fostered by institutions by upholding an excellent culture and back at home as well.

Its the adults that need it more than the children. Rather than preaching on why not to bully, ask why a bully is a bully and work towards eradicating that.

Satara doctor, Dr. Sampada Munde, was repeatedly forced by the police to give false reports. She was repeatedly raped too, so she killed herself a few days ago. Justice Yashwant Varma, Supreme Court judge, with crores of burnt cash found in his home, still walks free. Everything he has collected is still in his possession. Search for "government engineer" on Twitter, and you will see stories every day of people with salaries of less than 1 lakh per month, owning 10+ luxurious houses across India. Punjab DIG, Harcharan Bhullar, even had houses in Canada and Dubai. Apart from government officials, every day, there are new videos of bus, truck, and Thar drivers being reckless to the extent of gleefully murdering people. How about modified sleeper buses that have become fire hazards? The one at Kurnool killed 20 last week, and hundreds more buses found with illegal modifications.

"A Subject We Never Taught: Being Human" Some things, I realized too late in life.

It now feels kind of impractical to hope even... but I still hope there will be a day when things will get back on the track but we need to ensure some steps should be taken towards the improvement. Majority of places it's due to "power" and I hella don't know why they don't read Ramayana once irrespective of the religion they follow. They will get to know how one lust or attraction based thought killed Ravana and his entire generation then who are they as a ordinary human being.

What do you think is the purpose of language course work? In my syllabus the language courses were full of chapters about being human.

SquishyNarwhal

I mean the literature subjects

SwirlyMuffin

Ideally the purpose would have been to develop language understanding only but yes it depends a lot on the teacher...

We had this subject - Living Values - in secondary high (9th to 12th standard). But the irony was, that it was considered only as another high scoring subject to increase your percentage, rather than a chance to form a living value for a teenager.

These kinds of subjects not only need to be taught, but discussed thoroughly while pairing them up with public welfare and civic sense.
